Royal Conservatory of Music Exams

Royal Conservatory of Music exams are encouraged but not required for participation in music lessons. Preparation for performance exams in January, June and August each year. Preparation for written exams in December, May and August. See the link for exam application information and deadlines.

Royal Conservatory Piano Syllabus Update

  • The Piano Syllabus, 2008 Edition will take effect September 1, 2008.
  • The crossover period for using the Piano Syllabus, 2001 Edition goes from September 1, 2008 to August 31, 2009.
  • Starting September 1, 2009, only the Piano Syllabus, 2008 Edition can be used for examinations.
  • During the crossover year sessions of January 2009, June 2009 and August 2009, candidates playing technical tests and studies from the Piano Syllabus, 2001 Edition will be permitted to play repertoire from the Piano Syllabus, 2008 Edition.
  • Candidates playing technical tests from the Piano Syllabus, 2001 Edition must play studies from the same Syllabus. Likewise, candidates playing technical tests from the Piano Syllabus, 2008 Edition must play studies from the same.

High School Credit Information

Are you interested in getting high school credit for your music lessons? Students may use completed Conservatory levels for equivalent high school credits. The most recent criteria may be found on the linked PDF file to see if you qualify. Conservatory Requirements for High School Credit

Norfolk Musical Arts Festival

Students are encouraged to participate in the Norfolk Musical Arts Festival (NMAF) in Simcoe. This is an annual festival that is held in Simcoe, Ontario. See below for important festival dates:

  • This year's festival dates are from February 24 to March 5, 2010.
  • The Lions/Rotary Cup performances are on Thursday, March 4, 2010.
  • The Festival Highlights Concert is on Tuesday, March 9, 2010.
  • The entry deadline is Thursday, November 12, 2009 at 4:00 p.m.

Music Teacher Organizations

The Ontario Registered Music Teachers' Association (ORMTA) is a not-for-profit professional organization managed by a volunteer council and comprised of more than 1,300 Registered Music Teachers and related members across Ontario.

The Canadian Federation of Music Teachers Association (CFMTA) was formed in 1935 and is a national association of qualified private music instructors. Our purpose is to promote and maintain high standards of teaching among our members and to foster music excellence in our students.
